TACO TUESDAY!!! : The Disturbing Deep

Welcome back to another fabulous Taco Tuesday! Today Taco Tim and I will be discussing some pretty disturbing stuff about the ocean. Cause, hey, why not? Let’s start by mentioning that any sources I used will be cited at the bottom, so if you want more facts, go check those sites out.

Let’s talk about the lovely Northern Stargazer, or Astroscopus guttatus. Ok, lovely may be an overstatement. This fish lies in the mud waiting for innocent crustaceans to wander by, then creates a vacuum with their mouths to take them to their doom. If that isn’t disturbing enough, these fish have an organ on their heads that can deliver an electric charge to stun and confuse prey and scare off predators. Pretty terrifying.

Ah, the Blobfish or Psychrolutes marcidus. A creature of beauty which was voted as the worlds ugliest animal. Pretty soon, it even became the mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. I don’t know about you but I find this animal adorable. Disturbing, but adorable. Just look at those droopy cheeks! Blobfish eat small crabs and lobsters, but instead of swimming and hunting, they just float around and wait for food to come by. This is helped by the fact that blobfish are especially buoyant.

  1. On second viewing, I alter my comment to say: “The Northern Stargazer looks really interesting and reminds me of how little we really know about the ocean. I make no comment on the aesthetics of its appearance or what I may have said regarding those aesthetics.”
